The company name today is “Nabisco”, an abbreviated form of “National Biscuit Company”. The National Biscuit Company was formed in 1898 with the merger of three existing bakery businesses. The current embossed design was introduced in 1952. Usually the company name “Nabisco” is inside the oval, but for the cookie it’s the brand name “Oreo”. Those elements are an oval with a cross on top, a cross with two bars. If you take a close look at the embossed design on the front and back of an Oreo cookie, you’ll spot the main elements of the Nabisco logo. The idea is that rosemary can in fact grow in some arid locations with only the moisture that is carried by a sea breeze. The name of the herb comes from the Latin “ros marinus” which means “dew of the sea”. The character Ophelia in William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” utters the line “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance”. For example, mourners might throw sprigs of rosemary into graves, symbolically remembering the dead. As such, rosemary has been used as a symbol of remembrance, especially in Europe and Australia. The herb known as rosemary is reputed to improve the memory.

After WWII, the United States maintained a major Air Force Base in Rabat, part of Strategic Air Command (SAC). Rabat is the capital city of the Kingdom of Morocco. If you hold the palm of your hand up in front of you, the radius is the bone on the “thumb-side” of the arm, and the ulna is the bone on the “pinky-side”. The radius and ulna are bones in the forearm. A new generation of tram, a so-called light-rail system, was introduced in London in 2000. Even though the trams disappeared in the early fifties, many of the rails that carried the trams remained in some streets for many years afterwards (I remember them well as a child). Trams were gradually replaced by diesel buses after WWII, with the last tram running in 1952. Trams were a common form of transport in London starting with horse-drawn versions in 1860. Then we completed a story map together.Today’s Wiki-est Amazonian Googlies Across The kids really loved this story.Īfter reading and discussing the short story, students answered the questions: What kind of family does Papa have? How do you know? in the writing section of their reader's notebooks. His pants end up way too short! Then the family works together and makes the pants into shorts.

I found the story on In this story, Papa buys a pair of pants that need hemming. It is a great way to continuously teach and review genres.įor this lesson, I used the folktale "Papa's New Pants" from an old edition of Highlights magazine. This also gave us a chance to discuss the genre and add a tally mark to our genre tally list! Beth Newingham has a great "genre overview" handout and "genre tally sheet." ( ) My students and I add a tally mark for everything that we read. They usually have very clear problems, solutions, and themes. Folktales are one of my favorite genres for teaching story elements.
